Fiberguide currently only manufacture to offer CO2 laser splicing and glass shaping capabilities

Stirling, N.J. (January 30, 2017) – Fiberguide Industries, a leader in the specialty fiber optics industry, has advanced its fiber end cap production capabilities with a new CO2 laser splicing and glass shaping system. Developed by Nyfors Teknologi AB (Stockholm, Sweden) based on technology from the Fraunhofer Institute (Jena, Germany), the SMARTSPLICER™ allows Fiberguide to produce the largest end caps currently available. The SMARTSPLICER uses new computer assisted laser targeting technology to provide unparalleled fiber/ end cap splicing capability.

“The SMARTSPLICER technology developed by Nyfors and the Fraunhofer will give us the capability to easily attach large end caps to optical fiber to produce high power laser delivery connectors and systems,” said Fiberguide vice president of technology, Dr. Devinder Saini “The SMARTSPLICER uses a revolutionary patented technology developed by the Fraunhofer IOF Institute in Germany that allows the fusion of large pieces of glass to fibers. We now have the capability to fuse end caps of up to 25 mm (and larger) to fibers.”

Fiber end caps are useful for many applications, especially those where minimizing power at the air/ glass interface is desirable. Fiberguide now offers splicing of end caps with end cap-fiber ratios greater than 50:1. This technique is especially useful for high power fiber lasers. Coupled with Fiberguide’s RARe Motheye fiber, the new large endcaps allow for unprecedented durability and anti-reflection, even for the most demanding power levels.

Fiberguide will be demonstrating its new SMARTSPLICER technology, along with sample optical fibers, at the SPIE Photonics West Exhibition, booth 1745. The exhibition takes place January 28 to February 2 at the Moscone Center (San Francisco, Calif.).
